During the meal, they talked about their brothers when they were younger. They laughed and cried. It was cathartic for both of them.

“What is Paris like now?”

Sophie took a second to collect her thoughts. “Quieter. But more dangerous. It is hard to explain. There are hardly any cars or people on the streets, yet the métro is packed. There is an air of tension as if something is about to explode.”

“You mean as in people resisting?”

“I don’t know. There have been a few isolated incidents, but in reality nothing more than people whistling the anthem or drawing the victory sign on walls. A friend from work went to the cinema. We are used to people sneezing and blowing their noses.”

At Yvette’s look of confusion, Sophie hastened to explain. “Sorry, I forget you don’t know what it is like. There are always propaganda films being played. I haven’t been in ages, but there was quite a famous one about a French pilot being imprisoned by the British. Can you imagine it? The audience sends a message to the authorities they don’t believe it by sneezing or snorting. The usherettes add to the noise by telling people to be quiet; the result is nobody gets to hear the movie. It made the Germans very cross.”

“That is resistance!”

“You don’t live in Paris, my friend. They can arrest you for the slightest thing. They arrested one lady for using her face powder. It seems the Germans thought she was being disrespectful to the newsreader. I’m serious. It’s like a tinderbox.”

Yvette shuddered. “Maybe it is a good thing I am not there.”

Sophie nodded. “You would hate it and not just because you are Jewish. We have to be polite no matter how they behave. But sometimes people fight back. I saw a soldier ask for a light at a café. The Frenchman said he didn’t smoke, all the while blowing rings of smoke into the German’s face.” Sophie fell silent for a second before mumbling, “Sometimes we are unkind.”

“What do you mean?”

“Not all Germans are the same. There are real nasty people, but you get those in every country. You should see some of papa’s French friends. They would put Hitler to shame. I think a lot of the German soldiers stationed in Paris are lonely. Can you imagine walking around a city where you don’t understand the language and everyone hates you on sight? They must miss home, their families, their sweethearts.”

Yvette rested her elbows on the table and put her head in her hands. “Sophie, Sophie, what will I do with you? You want me to cry over these men? They don’t belong here, so tell them to take their tears and go home.”

Sophie didn’t bother trying to convince Yvette. She felt bad enough even thinking of feeling sorry for the Germans. The same ones who’d killed Jules and now had her brother in prison. She didn’t need a doctor; she needed a psychiatrist.

“I’d best get back home.”

“Why don’t you stay the night? I have a bottle of wine.
